Get the SCOOP on dog food: Pedigree Adult Formula

Pedigree dog food is a popular brand of dog food that can be found in almost all grocery stores and pet specialty stores.
Although the company does great things for homeless pets and animal shelters, their food leaves much to be desired nutritionally.

How much should my dog eat?

  • Feeding Instructions: (per Pedigree, cups per day)
  • Adult dogs 3 to 12 lb. 1/3 – 1 cup
  • Adult dogs 13 to 20 lb. 1 – 1-1/3 cups
  • Adult dogs 21 to 35 lb. 1-1/3 – 2 cups
  • Adult dogs 36 to 50 lb. 2 – 2-2/3 cups
  • Adult dogs 51 to 75 lb. 2-2/3 – 3-1/3 cups
  • Adult dogs 76 to 100 lb. 3-1/3 – 4-1/4 cups
  • Adult dogs weighing 100 lb. or more 4-1/4 cups daily plus 1/4 cup for each 10 lb. of body weight over 100 lb.

Note: These feeding directions are guidelines only. If your dog is still a developing adult (many large breeds are considered developing until age 2-3) or above average in activity level you will need to adjust.

What’s in it?

GROUND WHOLE CORN, MEAT AND BONE MEAL, CORN GLUTEN MEAL, ANIMAL FAT (PRESERVED WITH BHA AND CITRIC ACID), GROUND WHOLE WHEAT, CHICKEN BY-PRODUCT MEAL, BREWER’S RICE, DRIED PLAIN BEET PULP, NATURAL FLAVOR, SALT, POTASSIUM CHLORIDE, VEGETABLE OIL (SOURCE OF LINOLEIC ACID), VITAMINS (dl-ALPHA TOCOPHEROL ACETATE [SOURCE OF VITAMIN E], L-ASCORBYL-2-POLYPHOSPHATE [SOURCE OF VITAMIN C*] VITAMIN A SUPPLEMENT, THIAMINE MONONITRATE [VITAMIN B1], BIOTIN, d-CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE, RIBOFLAVIN SUPPLEMENT [VITAMIN B2], VITAMIN D3 SUPPLEMENT, VITAMIN B12 SUPPLEMENT), CHOLINE CHLORIDE, MINERALS (ZINC SULFATE, ZINC PROTEINATE, COPPER SULFATE, COPPER PROTEINATE, MANGANESE PROTEINATE, POTASSIUM IODIDE), ADDED FD&C COLORS (RED 40, YELLOW 5, BLUE 2) As you can see the first ingredient is corn, followed by meat and bone meal making it high in carbs and low in protein. What is meat and bone meal? the AAFCO defines it as; the rendered product from mammal tissues, including bone, exclusive of blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents, except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices.

How much does it cost?

  • 30lb Bag – $20-$22

What’s the bottom-line?

While the Pedigree company does amazing work in donating money to shelters across the country, their food leaves much to be desired in terms of nutrition. For the amount per bag, there are better options.
